Robert is of Italian heritage, with his father's family originating from Montecorvino Rovella, Salerno and his mother's parents originally from Bomba in Abruzzo. Picardo claims that one of the highlights of his life was visiting both ancestral towns with his daughters and his brother Joe in the summer of 2011. He graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1971 and originally entered Yale University as a pre-medical student, but opted to act instead. He ended up graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Drama from Yale University. Picardo is an accomplished singer. While he was at Yale University, he was a member of The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, the second longest running undergraduate a cappella group in the United States. During the 1988-1991 television seasons, Picardo was simultaneously seen on the ABC Vietnam series China Beach in the role of Dr. Dick Richard, as well as the ABC series The Wonder Years in the role of Coach Cutlip, and is among a small group of television actors to achieve notice on two television series at the same time. He played a number of roles in Dante's family science fiction film Explorers (1985), and later appeared in Dante's The 'Burbs, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Matinee, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Small Soldiers and Innerspace as the Cowboy. From 1995 to 2001, he played the role of the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) and Emergency Command Hologram (ECH) in the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Before being accepted for this role, Picardo initially auditioned for the role of Neelix.[5] He later also directed two episodes. He also played additional versions of the role of the EMH in the 1996 motion picture Star Trek: First Contact and the 1997 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?". In 2001, he guest starred in 7 Days episode "Revelation", purporting to be a time traveler from seven years in the future. In 2004, he began playing the recurring role of International Oversight Advisory (IOA) member Richard Woolsey in both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, where he became a regular in the fifth season. His first appearance in those series was in the Stargate SG-1 episode "Heroes (Part 2)". In 2007, he played Principal White in Ben 10: Race Against Time. In 2007, he starred in the independent feature film by director Russ Emanuel, "P.J.", alongside John Heard and Vincent Pastore.[6] He also more recently starred in Russ Emanuel's "Chasing the Green" (2008), alongside William Devane, Jeremy London and Ryan Hurst. In 2007 and 2008, Star Trek: The Music was a multi-city tour with John de Lancie. Picardo and de Lancie narrated around the orchestral performance, explaining the history of the music in Star Trek. Picardo has also appeared on Kojak in a 1977 episode, E-Ring as a media rep in The Pentagon, as an enraged father in Cold Case, and as a police officer in CSI: NY. He also appeared as a recurring guest star in two episodes of Season 7 of Smallville. Away from acting, Picardo is a member of the Board of Directors' Advisory Council of The Planetary Society, where he has served since the late 1990s. Other career highlights include performing in Leonard Bernstein's Mass in D during its European debut tour, performing with the Yale University Society of Orpheus & Bacchus a cappella singing group as an undergraduate, and appearing in dozens of other television and film roles, including the film Our Last Days as Children. On February 5, 2008, it was announced that Picardo would be joining the regular cast of Stargate Atlantis full-time for the series' fifth and final season. He will be taking over the role of mission commander of the Atlantis Expedition. Recently, Picardo performed the voice of Loki in the Xbox 360 video game Too Human. In 2009, he also appeared in Pushing Daisies, Chuck and Castle. Also in 2009, he played the lead role in the independent psychological thriller film Sensored. In 2010, Picardo had a cameo in the final episode of Persons Unknown, as a member of "the program"'s governing board. Picardo also voices Robert McNamara in Call of Duty: Black Ops in campaign and in the 'Zombie mode' after completing campaign on the one map, "FIVE". Welcome to the SciFi Rewind: Firefly

Firefly is an American space western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon, under his Mutant Enemy Productions label. Whedon served as an executive producer, along with Tim Minear. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things". The show explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today"

Eve Myles

Eve MylesIn 2000 Myles took on the central role of Ceri Owen (Née Lewis) in the BBC Wales drama Belonging. Her longest role to date, Myles played Ceri from the series' first episode through to its final series in 2008; returning for a one off special in 2009. In 2001, Myles undertook a role in the television film Score and the TV mini-series Tales from Pleasure Beach. From 2003, Myles based herself in Stratford upon Avon, initially playing Lavinia in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Titus Andronicus, for which she received the Sunday Times Ian Charleson award in 2004. She has also played Bianca in The Taming of The Shrew and in 2005, appeared opposite Michael Gambon in Henry IV, Part I and II at the National Theatre. Myles appeared in the ITV drama Colditz in 2005. She took a supporting role in the Doctor Who episode "The Unquiet Dead", playing servant girl Gwyneth. This brought her to the attention of Lead Writer Russell T Davies, who would progress to create and produce Torchwood. Considering her to be "one of Wales' best-kept secrets", Davies wrote the role of Gwen Cooper in Torchwood specifically for Myles. Speaking on her casting, Myles stated that having the part written for her was like having her "own personal Oscar." Gwen, an audience surrogate character, is characterised by Myles as Torchwood's "social worker", who "can run and fight and stand in her own corner and win." Her role in Torchwood also led to Myles making a second appearance in Doctor Who, for its Fourth series' finale, alongside Torchwood co-stars John Barrowman and Gareth David-Lloyd. Myles has appeared in every episode of Torchwood. Myles also appeared in the premiere episode of Merlin, called "The Dragon's Call" where she played Lady Helen of Mora and Mary Collins, a witch who impersonated her. Her performance in this role was described positively by Anthony Head, who said that 'she did it dead straight and very scarily. There was one moment she was delivering a speech to me in full prosthetic make-up... The French background artists didn’t speak English but burst into applause at the end because they were moved by the emotion of it.' She portrayed the character of Maggy Plornish in Andrew Davies' 2008 adaptation of Little Dorrit, which later went on to win seven Emmy awards. Early 2008 also saw the actress host a radio show centred around Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe and narrate a short story, Sorry for the Loss by Bridget Keehan, both airing on BBC Radio Wales. 2009 saw her star in the award winning independent Welsh film A Bit of Tom Jones as well as the one-off Drama, Framed, for BBC Wales, alongside Trevor Eve. In July 2010, Myles announced she would appear in an original BBC Cymru Wales TV series, Baker Boys, co-written by Helen Raynor and Gary Owen and airing in early 2011. 2011 also saw Myles provide the voice of the Dalish elf Merrill in the Bioware video game Dragon Age 2. In July 2011, to coincide with Torchwood's fourth series Myles presented part of a BBC Wales Documentary entitled Wales and Hollywood, which featured the actress travelling to the Hollywood Walk of Fame to find the Welsh talent honoured there. In 2012 Myles returned to the stage in Zach Braff's play All New People, ran for ten consecutive weeks at the West End's Duke of York's Theatre following runs at the Manchester Opera House (8–11 February 2012) and the King's Theatre in Glasgow (14–18 February). In 2013 she took the title role in the BBC1 drama Frankie, filmed in Bristol, which follows the life of a district nurse who cares more about her patients than her own life.

DANIEL LOGAN - ACTOR STAR WARS - ATTACK OF THE CLONES Daniel Logan, born in New Zealand, started acting when he was 10 years old. He got his break when Auckland children's rugby teams were being scouted to find a boy for a TV commercial. After auditioning with hundreds of other young rugby players, Daniel got the part, his first acting role, playing a little boy who gets knocked into the mud by Auckland rugby star Michael Jones. He was noticed by other casting agents and that break led to more commercials and TV appearances, including a recurring role in episodes of the New Zealand medical series "Shortland Street" and a guest appearance in international hit "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." Daniel also starred in the short film, "Falling Sparrows" and provided the lead & supporting voices in 2 animated series' "Tamota" and "Takapu." He also had a part in "The Legend of Johnny Lingo." At the top of this young actors growing resume sits "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," with the coveted role of Boba Fett. Playing Boba Fett required more then a love of action, it also required patience. Daniel recalls being next to blue and green screen back drops through seemingly endless special effects takes. At one point, a series of 82 different shots of Daniel were done for a special effects sequence of clones that would only last a few seconds on-screen. He knows all the work was worth it, and is very proud and honored to be a part of the Star Wars legacy. ATTENDING PROFESSIONALS ALBIN JOHNSON - FOUNDER OF THE 501st - Vader's Fist In 1997 Albin Johnson was coping with the loss of a leg from a car accident when he heard the news that the Star Wars trilogy was set to be re-released worldwide. Finding inspiration in the movies they loved since childhood, he and a friend set out to acquire the armor of their favorite character in the films, the Imperial Stormtrooper, just in time to appear at the movie premieres. Public response was so strong that Albin launched a website showcasing his armor and before long Stormtroopers from around the world started calling. The sight of so many dedicated troopers prompted him to recall his father’s tales of WWII and the camaraderie he shared with his fellow pilots. So Albin created a fictional Imperial unit named the 501st service to Darth Vader himself, and re-launched the website as a gallery for displaying pictures of his fellow costumers in the role of heroic soldiers. Over night the 501st, which Albin nick-named “Vader’s Fist”, became a Star Wars sensation among fans and in thirteen years grew to over 5,000 members in 43 countries. Today the 501st recognized part of the Star Wars universe. The Legion works closely with Lucasfilm and its partners on projects large and small. The Legion’s local units, called Garrisons, volunteer in their communities and engage regularly in charity work. In 2007 George Lucas invited 200 of the 501st Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade. Today the group continues to spread the magic of Star Wars at product releases, conventions, children’s hospitals, and charity events. Albin has also started a version of the 501st Galactic Academy. The Academy website showcases pictures of young fans who want to get in on the fun. And in 2006, following the death of his daughter Katie from brain cancer, Albin’s family was honored by another Star Wars club, the R2 Builders, when they answered Katie’s wish to have a pink version of R2-D2 named after her. R2-KT was born, and soon after she was inducted as an actual character in the Star Wars universe when she appeared in the series Clone Wars. Today “KT” travels the country appearing at events, raising awareness of pediatric illnesses, and spreading joy to Star Wars fans everywhere. To learn more, be sure to visit the 501st Legion website at www.501st.com The Galactic Academy at www.galactic-academy.com, and R2-KT’s website at www.r2kt.com. The SciFi Diner Podcast

A 2012 Parsec Finalist

Richard Dean Anderson

Richard Dean Anderson is probably best known as MacGyver, the clever and inventive nonviolent hero who solved problems in his own unique way for seven successful seasons on ABC. In his roles before and since, this gifted actor has continued to demonstrate his remarkable talent and versatility. Richard was born on January 23, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Stuart Anderson, taught English, drama, and humanities at a local high school, and is an accomplished jazz bassist. His mother, Jocelyn, is an artist, talented in both painting and sculpture. Richard is the eldest of four sons. He and his brothers, Jeffrey Scott, Thomas John, and James Stuart, grew up in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, where Richard developed early interests in sports, the arts, music, and acting. Like many boys growing up in Minnesota, Richard dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player. However, at the age of 16, he broke both arms, in separate accidents three weeks apart, while playing in high school hockey games. He put aside his dreams of playing professionally, though he still harbors a deep love for the sport. Richard talks of his restlessness growing up, his early desire to explore, and his adventures hitchhiking and hopping freight trains. At the age of 17, he took a 5641 mile bicycle trip from his home in Minnesota through Canada and Alaska, an experience which was sparked by his sense of adventure and discovery, but which also gave him a more centered sense of direction. He studied drama at St. Cloud State University and at Ohio University, though he left just short of completing his degree. His travels took him briefly to New York City, and he spent some time experiencing the cultural revolution of the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, before finally settling in Los Angeles. There he worked as a street mime and juggler, and as a jester-singer at a Renaissance-style cabaret. He also worked for a time at Marineland, where he wrote, directed, and performed in the marine mammal shows. His job included holding fish in his mouth for the killer whales to leap up and snatch, and he tells of the powerful whack to the face he took while rehearsing his routine with an orca. He appeared in plays and live theater as well, including landing a role in Superman in the Bones at the Pilgrimage Theatre. During his early years he also joined his friend Carl Dante, and for a time sang and played guitar as part of Carl's rock band under the name "Ricky Dean and Dante". Richard came to national attention in 1976 as Dr. Jeff Webber on the popular daytime drama General Hospital. After five years in that role, he felt it was time to move on, and he left to try his hand at prime time television. He appeared in two short-lived television series for CBS, as the eldest brother in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in 1982, and as a hot-shot Naval pilot in Emerald Point N.A.S. in 1983, as well as numerous guest appearances in other series. In 1985 Richard was cast in his signature role as MacGyver, on ABC. He has told the story of how he won the role. He had been called in for an audition, and asked to "cold read" an unfamiliar script. Being very nearsighted, he asked to wear his glasses for the reading, and that simple unselfconscious gesture immediately convinced the show's producers that they had found the right man to become their unpretentious hero. MacGyver ran for seven successful years, and continues to enjoy popularity all around the world. He made his TV movie debut in 1986 in Ordinary Heroes, with Valerie Bertinelli. In this remake of the 1945 movie Pride of the Marines, Richard gave a moving performance as a soldier who is blinded three days before returning home from Vietnam. In preparation for the emotional demands of the role, he studied with the late Peggy Feury before shooting began. He demonstrated his incredible talent for a variety of roles when he appeared in several movies for CBS television following the finale of MacGyver. In 1992 he starred as a disillusioned cop opposite Justine Bateman in the movie In the Eyes of a Stranger, and as a psychotic stalker pursuing Marg Helgenberger in Through the Eyes of a Killer. His chilling performance as an abusive husband opposite Susan Dey in the 1994 movie Beyond Betrayal caused Daily Varietyto remark, "...credit Richard Dean Anderson with a performance so creepy that masks of his character could be Halloween bestsellers." In June of 1995 he explored the opposite end of the acting spectrum with a powerful and touching performance as a father grieving the loss of his young son in Past the Bleachers, for ABC. As MacGyver came to an end, Richard and his partner, Michael Greenburg, had signed an overall deal with Paramount Pictures to develop and produce several films and series for television for their own production company, Gekko Film Corp. In their first project, Richard acted as both star and executive producer of two MacGyver movies for television, both of which were filmed in London in 1993. MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis and MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday aired in 1994 to critical acclaim. Their next project for Gekko was the 1995 TV seriesLegend for UPN. In it, Richard portrayed Ernest Pratt, a dime novelist who reluctantly takes on the role of his literary hero, Nicodemus Legend, in a lighthearted blend of western and science fiction. Once again Richard took on the role of executive producer, as well as demonstrating a considerable talent for comedy, in what he has described as his favorite role to date. Following the premature cancellation of Legend, Richard signed an agreement with CBS television, and filmed a pilot episode for a new television series, Firehouse, although the series was not picked up by the network. His next appearance was as the heroic captain of a doomed airliner in the 1996 blockbuster NBC miniseries Pandora's Clock, which received critical acclaim and was an important ratings winner for the network. He followed this success by joining with MGM/UA and Showtime television in a joint deal with Gekko Film Corp to produce and star in the new science fiction series Stargate SG-1, based on the 1994 movie. His new series began production in Vancouver in February of 1997, and debuted to outstanding ratings on Showtime on July 27, 1997. Richard loves to travel, and he has retained his love for music and the arts. He enjoys collecting art, with his tastes running from the French Impressionists to the more modern. He continues to play the guitar, and has even tried his hand at composing, including the original piece,Eau d'Leo, which was used in the series MacGyver. He has expressed his appreciation for both classical music and jazz, as well as the country-rock guitar style of artists such as Steve Earle, and has considered Leo Kottke to be his musical idol for years. An avid sports fan, he indulges his passions for hockey, skiing, baseball, sky diving, cycling, and auto racing whenever possible. He enjoys fast cars and motorcycles, and owns, among others, both a 1000cc Harley-Davidson Sportster and a black Acura NSX. He has participated in the Toyota Celebrity Long Beach Grand Prix twice, as well as various other racing events around the country. He has a passion for skiing, and can often be found on the ski slopes, both in his off time, and for numerous celebrity events for charity. As a huge fan of ice hockey, he is one of the founders of the Celebrity All Star Hockey team, a collection of hockey enthusiasts from the sports and entertainment worlds, who play in NHL cities throughout the country for charity. In 1988 and 1992, Richard was chosen to be the honorary captain of Team USA, the United States Olympic hockey team, and he takes pride in his opportunities to become an ambassador for the sport. Richard actively supports many charities and organizations. For many years he has been on the Board of Trustees for the Challengers Boys and Girls Club, a youth organization founded in 1968 with the help of MacGyver executive producer Stephen Downing, and upon which the Challenger Center of the TV series was based. He is the recipient of the 1995 Celebrity Award from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and his commitment to the Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to terminally ill children, has included many opportunities for his young fans to visit the set. He has supported the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and has done several public service announcements for causes he strongly supports, including the Center for the Prevention of Handgun Violence, and Project Literacy US. For many years he has given his support to the Special Olympics, and was one of the key speakers at the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics games in 1991. In recent years, Richard's focus has been particularly drawn to environmental issues. He has been named to the board of directors of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and he has partnered with members of Earth River Expeditions to produce the "River Project," a series of documentaries about the great rivers of the world. Richard Dean Anderson is 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with naturally dark brown hair and eyes. He has a deep love of dogs, whom he refers to as his "favorite people," and his most constant companion for many years had been Whiskey, the Australian shepherd he had raised from a puppy, and a permanent fixture on the MacGyver set, who passed away in 1989 at the age of 13. In 1996, Richard found himself a new companion in Zoë, yet another Australian shepherd puppy and "best friend." Richard has never married, and although he prefers to keep his private life private, he has been linked in the past with several high-profile women, including Deidre Hall, Sela Ward, Marlee Matlin, Katarina Witt, Teri Hatcher, and Lara Flynn Boyle. In 1996, Richard met Apryl Prose, and together they celebrated the birth of their first child, a daughter, on August 2, 1998. Wylie Quinn Annarose Anderson entered the world at 7 lbs. 11 oz. Richard speaks with great enthusiasm about his new adventure of fatherhood, and takes great pride in his reputation as a doting dad. Richard lives both in Vancouver and near Los Angeles, as well as owning a cabin in northern Minnesota. Throughout his career, Richard has made a point of selecting roles that would allow him to stretch and demonstrate the range of his remarkable skill. With additional projects in development from Gekko Film Corp, Richard's fans can look forward to many more appearances from this accomplished and versatile actor. Yes, this week we finally get a full hour of Star Wars Rebels, and we can't wait to see how the Rebellion ignites. Plus, The Vampire Diaries returns for its sixth season, Movie News: More Batman v Superman pics suggest anti-Superman movement. More photos from the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice seem to indicate that humanity is not happy at all with the man from Krypton. Comic Book Movie has posted a new batch of images -- taken by a Detroit resident named Tim Reinman, who also snapped some photos of what could be Wayne Manor in the movie -- showing what appears to be a demonstration held against Superman (Henry Cavill). Signs bearing slogans like "Super Death" and "Thanks for the 'help'" (the latter with flames underneath it) seem to indicate that there is a lot of ill will toward Kal-El for the carnage caused by his titanic battle with the minions of Zod in Man of Steel. Apparently some extras have been spotted wearing "Superman Survivor" shirts as well. They're even burning a Superman dummy in effigy! Movie News: Justin Bieber lends his voice as Knight Rider talking car KITT in new comedy flick with David Hasselhoff He called me and asked me for a favor and I called him back and said, "Can you do me a favour?" and he said, "Yes,"' David told Yahoo. 'I did his favor first because I love the Bieb. I think he’s a cool kid and he gets a bad rap. He’s a good guy and I like his music, I’ve known him for five years.' Killing Hasselhoff is being directed by Darren (Diary Of A Mad Black Woman) Grant and follows a guy who tries to win a celebrity death pool by hiring a hit man to kill David Hasselhoff. Besides Hasselhoff himself, Jim Jeffries and Jon Lovitz are attached to star. Justin was spotted taking a joyride with the Hoff in the iconic Pontiac Trans Am in Venice Beach, California on Tuesday. Bieber impressed co-star Ken Jeong, who chimed in: 'Justin couldn’t have been more kind or accommodating. He was just so generous with his time, and nailed the scene.' The Baby singer wore a black T-shirt as David was seen channeling his former character Michael Knight wearing a leather jacket and aviator sunglasses. The pair smiled and laughed as they worked. David also sported his trademark tan and dark hair hardly changed from his days as Michael Knight in the hit '80s show. Justin, who was born in 1994, wasn't even alive when the show first aired in 1982, but has no doubt caught repeats of the popular hit. We have full transcript of Shatner’s comments and video below. Shatner: JJ Called me about Star Trek 2016 – There ‘might’ be a part Today at his panel at Nashville Wizard World Comic Con, William Shatner talked about the recent rumor about a role for him in the 2016 Star Trek movie. It started when he was asked a question which wasn’t actually directly related to the rumor, but only if he had any interest in reprising the role of Kirk. Here is Shatner’s full answer: Shatner Asked To ‘Keep Quiet’ About Star Trek 2016+ Orci Says Role Must Be ‘Worthy Over the weekend William Shatner confirmed he had been contacted by JJ Abrams about how there "might" be a role for him in the 2016 Star Trek movie. Today Shatner has revealed that he has been contacted again and told to stop talking about Star Trek. Details on that below, plus how the media is covering Bill’s weekend revelation, and there are some new comments from Orci here at TrekMovie and Bill and Orci are also tweeting to each other. Here’s my dilemma, I was cautioned not to speak about this and the next day it was out all over Twitter. ‘So I talked about it and then I get another phone call telling me to keep quiet again! All I can say is that I’m very excited about the film." Orci: Role must ‘be worthy’ The director of the upcoming Star Trek movie Roberto Orci has again engaged fans here at TrekMovie.com and has dropped a couple of interesting comments about Bill over the last day. First was this exchange… Ralph Pinheiro – September 28, 2014 If it is true, I hope it was a very good idea and as Shatner said: “If it is meaningful”. I don´t want Bill or Nimoy coming back just with a good idea for sweep. While the intention is good, It could potentially wreck everything. —————————————————————————– boborci – September 28, 2014 [@Ralph Pinheiro]. exactly. I would never waste my hero’s time. Must be worthy of them if you’re gonna go for it. SCI FI 5 @ 5 Great Dr. Who Quotes 1. “Through crimson stars and silent stars and tumbling nebulas like oceans set on fire; through empires of glass and civilizations of pure thought, and a whole, terrible, wonderful universe of impossibilities. You see these eyes? They’re old eyes. And one thing I can tell you, Alex… Monsters are real.” – The Doctor  (Smith) 2. “It’s like when you’re a kid. The first time they tell you that the world’s turning and you just can’t quite believe it ’cause everything looks like it’s standing still… I can feel it: the turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at 1,000 miles an hour and the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at 67,000 miles an hour, and I can feel it. We’re falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go… That’s who I am.” – The Doctor ( Eccleson) 3. When you wake up… I’ll be a story in your head. But that’s okay. We’re all stories, in the end… just make it a good one, eh? Because it was. It was the best.” – The Doctor (Smith) 4. People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.  (Tenant) 5. Oh, how to explain the mechanics of the infinite temporal flux? I know: Back to the Future. It’s like Back to the Future. (Tenant)

Star Trek Voyager: Acts of Contrition

aocAn original novel set in the universe of Star Trek: Voyager—and the sequel to theNew York Times bestseller Protectors! Admiral Kathryn Janeway has now taken command of the Full Circle Fleet. Her first mission: return to the Delta Quadrant and open diplomatic relations with the Confederacy of the Worlds of the First Quadrant, a civilization whose power rivals that of the Federation. Captain Chakotay knows that his choices could derail the potential alliance. While grateful to the Confederacy Interstellar Fleet for rescuing the Federation starships from an alien armada, Voyager’s captain cannot forget the horrors upon which the Confederacy was founded. More troubling, it appears that several of Voyager’s old adversaries have formed a separate and unlikely pact that is determined to bring down the Confederacy at all costs. Sins of the past haunt the crew members of the Full Circle Fleet as they attempt to chart a course for the future. Will they learn much too late that some sins can never be forgiven…or forgotten? ™, ®, & © 2014 CBS Studios, Inc. STAR TREK and related marks are trademarks of CBS Studios, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Recently we had the pleasure of talking with author Brian Herbert and what an enjoyable conversation we had. During our conversation we talked about a great many things including growing up with the Dune legacy, taking ownership of the legacy by beginning to write in the universe, and Brian's newest book The Little Green Book of Chairman Rahma. We also had the opportunity to ask some of the questions that you listeners sent in for the interview. Whether you're a fan of all things Dune, the expanded universe, or just the original works,  you're going to find something interesting in this talk. So sit back and enjoy what we hope to be the first in many discussions with Brian Herbert. [do_widget "text"]

Bringing Dune to OSFest by Jim Arrowood My first convention experience was last year, (July, 2013) in Omaha, Nebraska which is about three hours from where I live in Kearney, Nebraska. That was just a couple of months before my co-host for the Dune Saga Podcast, David invited me to be a part of this project. OSFest is a fan operated convention that takes place on the last weekend of July, or the first weekend of August. It is a very diverse event that includes many varied interests of the fans that attend. While looking at the schedule for this year’s event, I noticed an opportunity to introduce the Dune universe to the convention. So I proposed a Dune Book Panel and found myself moderating a panel. I then thought to myself, what am I going to talk about on this panel. Thanks to Scott and David, I did have a model to pattern from because of our DSP panel from last year’s Farpoint Con. I managed to find a partner and prepared a program, and a PowerPoint presentation. In hopes that Shai Hulud would clear the path before me, I plunged into the panel. The PowerPoint didn’t work, and I thought the recording was a disaster, but the discussion was good. There were about thirty people in attendance at the panel and one was there because she was curious about Dune and wanted to learn more about it before perhaps giving it a look. The discussion took several different directions and the hour went by very quickly. So, here is the recording of the Dune Book Panel from OSFest 7, recorded on August 1st at 9:00 PM. You can also read my blog post on OSFest at jimsscifi.blogspot.com where I have also included pictures.

I am glad when my truths and understandings are challenged. When my assumptions, based on my limited experience, are reworked.  Like many podcasters, when I started podcasting, I began with using the onboard microphone to my computer.  Then I graduated to the Blue Snowball Microphone. Because of my less than favorable experience with the Blue Snowball Microphone, I swore off all condenser microphones and all products from the Blue company. I'm so glad that I was proven wrong.

My enlightenment started when one of my co-host for the Sci-fi Diner Podcast showed up at a convention with a Blue Yeti. When she plugged it into the mixing board, I was amazed at how crystal clear and beautiful it sounded.  Then Bob DeGrande from the Dexter Cast came on the Podcasting Gear Show and talked about the Blue NESSIE Microphone. In a lot of ways, he and my co-host for the Sci-fi Diner helped redeem my perception of the microphones that Blue puts out.

"Designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording, Blue NESSIE Microphone automatically adapts to whatever you’re recording, applying professional studio processing combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount, to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing. Just as the latest point-and-shoot cameras will reduce redeye and automatically adjust focus and exposure for improved photos, Blue NESSIE Microphone professionally enhances audio so that you get polished music demos, podcasts, interviews, YouTube broadcasts and more, instantly!"

If you'd like to try out the Blue NESSIE Microphone for yourself, you can do so by clicking here. If you are ready use the Blue Nessie Microphone, please let me know what you think. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Michael Jan Friedman

Michael Jan Friedman's Personal WebsiteMichael Jan Friedman is the author of nearly 70 books of fiction and non-fiction, about half of them set somewhere in the wilds of the Star Trek universe. In 1992 Friedman wrote Reunion, the first Star Trek: The Next Generation hardcover, which introduced the crew of the Stargazer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s first command. Over the years, the popularity of Reunion has spawned a number ofStargazer stories in both prose and comic book formats, including a six-novel original series. Friedman has also written for the Aliens, Predator, Wolf Man, Lois and Clark, DC Super Hero, Marvel Super Hero, and Wishbonelicensed book universes. Eleven of his book titles, including the autobiography Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Ghost Hunting (written with SciFi’s Ghost Hunters), have appeared on the prestigious New York Times primary bestseller list, and his novel adaptation of the Batman & Robin movie was for a time the #1 bestselling book in Poland (really). Friedman has worked at one time or another in network and cable television, radio, business magazines, and the comic book industry, in the process producing scripts for nearly 180 comic stories. Among his comic book credits is the Darkstars series from DC Comics, which he created with artist Larry Stroman, and the Outlaws limited series, which he created with artist Luke McDonnell. He also co-wrote the story for the acclaimed second-season Star Trek: Voyager episode “Resistance,” which guest-starred Joel Grey. Currently, Friedman is working on a variety of projects, including a contemporary fantasy novel featuring characters and themes from mythology tentatively called Blood of the Gods, a young adult fantasy novel set in Renaissance times, the true story of an extraordinary Little League team in 1955, and an epic-scale science fiction adventure. As always, he advises readers that no matter how many Friedmans they know, he is probably not related to any of them. Sometimes that advice should be heeded.Henry Sleep’s childhood memories of Saul’s Run are dark and jumbled images that terrify and confuse him in his all-too-frequent nightmares. When his mother’s horrible death and a bitter falling-out with his preacher father drove Henry from his West Virginia hometown almost ten years earlier, he knew he could never look back. But now the reverend Quincy Sleep is also dead, shockingly by his own hand, and the prodigal son must return to the tiny mining town where all of his most terrible secrets dwell. And he will not be welcomed back with open arms. Not by Sheriff Harold Crawford, who hides a taste for dark things behind his lawman facade. Not by Emily, the girlfriend Henry left behind, now shackled to a dying mother. Not by his one-time best friend, Perry Holland, who feels nothing for him now but a raging, inexplicable hatred. But if Henry hopes ever to sleep again, he will stay in Saul’s Run until he solves the mystery of his father’s death . . . and forces himself to remember what he and Perry found stirring in the hills outside of town many years ago.

Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Gunn was hired to write and direct the film that September. In February 2013, Pratt was hired to play Peter Quill / Star-Lord, and the supporting cast was filled out over the next several months. Filming began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England with filming continuing in London before wrapping up in October 2013. Post-production completed on July 7, 2014. The film is scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014 in the United States, and will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Leonard Nimoy will be making a guest appearance via Skype. The eighty-three-year-old Nimoy is only doing convention appearances via Skype now, and his Skype appearance at Away Mission in Tampa earlier this year was very well received by attendees. Other media guest stars include Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver, Stargate SG-1), Teryl Rothery (Stargate, Caprica), Eve Myles (Torchwood, Dr. Who), Silas Weir Mitchell (Grimm, 24), and Star Trek Seekers Cover Artist Rob Caswell. For fans of Star Trek literature, Shore Leave is the place to be. This year’s list of author guests includes: Kevin Dilmore, Michael Jan Friedman, Dave Galanter, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Jim Johnson, Jeffrey Lang, William Leisner, David Mack, Steven H Wilson, Marco Palmieri, Aaron Rosenberg, Melissa Scott, Kevin G Summers, Dayton Ward, Howard Weinstein, and Richard C White. There is also programming for children and teenagers. The Sixth Annual Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament will also take place during Shore Leave 36. This event raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is held in honor of the late Robbie Greenberger, son of Trek Author Robert Greenberger. The poker tournament will be held Saturday night, immediately after the masquerade. This tournament is played for chips only, and winners of the tournament will be awarded certificates. The Sixth Annual Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament is for a good cause and participants will have fun competing against one another. The Tardis Photo Booth will be making its appearance at Shore Leave 36. “The Tardis Photo Booth is a scale replica of a 1960′s era Police Public Call Box, the iconic time-traveling vehicle used by The Doctor in the Doctor Who series. This fairly accurate representation of the T.A.R.D.I.S. provides an opportunity for fans of the show to be photographed with it. “Along with the box, there’s a full scale, operator-driven Dalek, built to the scale of the Daleks used for the first three Doctors. At times, ‘Derek,’ as it is known, will travel around, interacting with convention members and posing for pictures. Finally, there is also a full-scale talking K-9, introduced by the 4th Doctor. The Tardis attendants appear in costume, covering Doctors three, four, ten and eleven, along with Amy Pond, The Master, and more.” Shore Leave 36 will take place at the Hunt Valley Inn, in Hunt Valley, Maryland, from August 1-3. In A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Mark Twain wrote, "she...knew more than one way to skin a cat." This phrase might seem gruesome to our modern sensibilities, but the essence of it rings true, especially when podcasters talk about recording Skype calls when co-hosting or conducting interviews. It seems that you can't go a week without hearing some way or someone talk about alternatives to recording Skype on your computer.

Many of podcasters rely on recording Skype using using programs are plug-ins, appliactaions, and programs that work with the Skype program. Audio Hijack Pro, which we talked about in this show, is one such program. While many podcast is find such programs to be satisfactory, the reality is that such programs can be very CPU intensive. Not only do you have Skype running in the background, but you've also have GarageBand, Audacity, or Adobe Audition. And then you have the program using the capture the call. This can use a lot of system resources and becomes a real big problem when fans kick it in on your computer. There are many ways around this.

Rob Walch, from the 411 Podcast, Today In iOS Podcast, and The Feed Podcast as well as a representative for Libsyn.com, a  really well-known podcast file hosting service, talks about his Skype set up and how you can record Skype calls without ever recording on your computer. While there are many alternatives to the equipment he uses to complete such a feat, it is the way it is set up that is important to note. I've included a diagram below of his detup that he graciously said I could share on this website. I encourage you to listen to the show. Let me know what you think of this set up. Do you use a similar setup? My setup is quite similar to Rob's although I use different equipment to accomplish the same purpose.

Join David, Scott and Jim as they pick apart the David Lynch version of Dune.  You might love it, hate it, or be somewhere in between.  We take a look at how the movie has impacted our lives as Dune fans.  We compare it to the original text penned by Frank Herbert.  We ferret out the inconsistencies.  And finally, we try to find the spice in this film.  Thanks for listening and here's to hoping that Shai Hulud clears your path.

Who would you rather have as a sidekick when going on an adventure?

News: The Doctor Returns: Doctor will return to a familiar setting in the Who season 8 finale Can you believe it? Peter Capaldi is nearly done filming his very first year as the Doctor. Exciting! And, to finish off, he's returning to a scene where his previous two incarnations visited not so very long ago -- the National Museum of Cardiff. Doctor Who has filmed in that space a few times, including "Planet of the Dead" and "The Big Bang," but it was used recently visited in the 50th Anniversary episode, "Day of the Doctor." The reason that's so notable, is because a prop was seen on set that seems decidedly Gallifreyan. Yes, what seems to be a grave marker that reads, "Rest in Peace. We Promise." Well, if you promise, inanimate object, then it must be true. But probably not. Of course, the Gallifreyan symbol is what makes the prop so interesting. Who is that memorial stone for? The Master? All of Gallifrey? Or, indeed, the Doctor, himself? And, considering the fact that the last time we were at the Cardiff Museum, there was a very special guest appearance from a classic Doctor, we can't help but wonder -- is Tom Baker set to make a return? Speculate away!

News: Will Harrison Ford’s injury affect Star Wars 7? All you "Star Wars" nerds, take a deep breath. There's no need for your brains to go all Death Star. UK website Jedi News reports Harrison Ford's injury is worse than initially reported, and he could be away from the set of "Star Wars: Episode VII" for six months. Or possibly longer. Breathe ... inhalers ... come on, now ... "Star Wars" fan sites are reporting there was an emergency meeting Monday morning at London's Pinewood Studios, now that estimates say Ford will be away longer than estimated, recovering from the broken leg he suffered when one of the hydraulic doors on the Millennium Falcon fell on him. Among the options reportedly discussed were temporarily ceasing production, re-writing the script to accommodate Ford's recovery, or ... (breathe) writing Ford out of the script entirely. Excuse me a second (begins sobbing, feverishly tears apart room, looking for inhaler). While we all keep breathing, remember that this is only a rumor and no one from LucasFilm, Disney or director J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company has commented. But even if part of these reports are true, it doesn't bode well for the film's planned December 2015 release. As U.K. pop culture site Metro reports, Ford was considered the lead actor in the movie, with Han Solo supposedly being a big part of the plot. Hey, I have an idea. Tom Selleck was almost Indiana Jones. Why doesn't someone call and see what he's up to?

Trek News: Nestle foods is trying to make a real-life, Star Trek-style food replicator What better way to make sure we’re all perfectly healthy, be it on a starship or right here on Earth, than to create a machine that figures out exactly what we need, then let it make the food to fill it. Welcome to the future. Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) has kicked off research and development on project “Iron Man,” which will investigate how essential nutrients affect the body, brain and gastrointestinal functions. They’ve already added 100 new scientists for the initiative. The goal? To develop a device to scan our nutrient needs, then design food around those needs, not unlike the replicators/previous models for food production featured in the various Star Trek series. In an interview with Bloomberg, NIHS director Ed Baetge said these proposed foods would be more effective at treating vitamin and nutrient deficiency than the supplements we currently use. According to Baetge, the goal would be for these devices to pop up in kitchens across the world over the next few decades, eventually becoming as ubiquitous as all our other creature comforts: “Out comes your food at the press of a button. If we do this right, it can be the next microwave in your kitchen.” This is a fascinating concept, and the applications are positively endless. Not only could this thing be a huge boon to health right here at home — with people finally having the access and knowledge to consume the exact items needed for optimal health -- but, looking toward the future, you could pop one of these devices on a future Enterprise and keep your space explorers nice and healthy as they explore the stars. But the big questions — can it make a good cup of Earl Grey tea? How’s the ice cream? Can I get a martini?

Scott was making the rounds again.

Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Scott Hertzog and Jonathan Colbon

Podcast length: 1:01:01

Sci-Fi Movie Podcast Firefly PosterThis time on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, we’re very pleased to welcome Scott Hertzog from The Scifi Diner Podcast, and he’s helping us discuss Firefly, the one season wonder from Joss Whedon.

On this episode we talk about how Firefly was launched, then botched by Fox, adopted by loyal fans and became the first TV show to inspire a full length movie after the TV series was cancelled.

The Positive Though it ran less than one full season, Firefly has cemented itself into the hearts of Sci-Fi Fans. With strong character development, exceptional dialogue and a unique Sci-Fi Cowboys in Space premise, Firefly showed us a very different and very plausible vision of the future. Even though the series was aired out of sequence and the full season was not shown, Firefly capture the imagination of Sci-Fi fans and will long be remember as one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever created.

The Negative It’s difficult to find anything significantly wrong with Firefly. We nitpicked a spell about how the Reavers could be insane cannibal monsters and still pilot spacecraft. There was a general consensus that the series (with the original cast) won’t come back, but there may be more story to tell through comics, books and even a new series with a new cast set in the future…but we won’t hold our breath.

The Verdict It’s difficult to be completely objective about Firefly, but if one were to step back and look at the show on a whole, they’d likely conclude that Firefly is one the best Sci-Fi TV programs to every grace the airwaves. Were it not for the poor treatment by Fox, Firefly could have last many more seasons and reached a much wider audience. As it stands, there’s a certain perfection about one great season and one great movie. Buy them both and be prepared to loan them out and buy more, Firefly is that good.

Storyline A defeated rebel and his rag tag band of misfits take to the stars to earn a living, criminal or otherwise, while avoiding interference from the overpowering Alliance. When they take on two new crew members who turn out to be fugitives from the Alliance, it become ever more difficult to eek out a living in the ‘verse.

Cast Nathan Fillion – Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds Gina Torres – Zoe Washburn Alan Tudyk – Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne Morena Baccarin – Inara Serra Adam Baldwin – Jayne Cobb Jewel Staite – Kaylee Fye Ron Glass – Shepherd Book Sean Maher – Dr. Simon Tam Summer Glau – River Tam

The Ready Room 146: We've All Done the Scarecrow

Death Wish.

When Voyager premiered, it seemed a given that the fan-favorite Q would turn up on the series. But the producers were cautious in using John de Lancie’s character yet again. As loved as Q was, he always ran the risk of being a one-verse song played over and over a danger highlighted by his single appearance on Deep Space Nine. The door to Q’s return was finally opened by an unexpected hand, that of Michael Piller’s son, Shawn. Having overheard his dad pondering the problem, he began pitching the idea that became “Death Wish.” And from this idea grew one of the most poignant Q episodes in all of Star Trek.

In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Suzanne Abbott, and Scott Hertzog of The SciFi Diner to discuss how Q's character grew through this story that tackles some very difficult and divisive issues, including assisted suicide, treatment of prisoners, and the rights of individuals versus the good of society.

In our news segment we take a look at Cross Cult's new covers for Kirsten Beyer's Full Circle and Unworthy, discuss how Data may have gotten his Federation citizenship (as described by "The Measure of a Man" writer Melinda Snodgrass), and ponder a proposed perfect RetKHAN to Star Trek Into Darkness.

Podcasters are a varied breed.  There are those who don't mind talking for a half an hour or an hour by themselves on a show.  They do it week after week, show after show, and think nothing of it. I laud them.  I don't think I could ever do it.

I love the Dune Saga Podcast and the SciFi Diner Podcast because I have co-hosts and do not have to rely on just myself to carry the conversation.  And one of the many reasons I love this show, the Podcasting Gear Show, is because I get to connect with many of you, and the interviews help carry the conversation.  Plus, my gear experience is limited to what I know and what I have encountered on my podcasting journey.  I learn so much for all of you and feel more connected to the podcasting community as a whole.

I have always recorded my interviews and co-hosts using Skype.  In the past year, I experimented with live streaming my podcasts using Google Hangouts.  For us, that worked as good as, perhaps better than Skype at times. But Christopher Jones from Trek.fm provides an alternate solution with way more functionally.

He uses GoToMeeting from Citrix to record his podcasts and loves the ease of use factor as well as its awesome capabilities. As the Citrix site states: "Citrix GoToMeeting makes it simple and cost-effective to meet online with colleagues and customers. Best of all, meeting participants can share their webcams in high definition, so you can enjoy more personal interactions – without needing a complicated setup. You can meet from anywhere on any device – no training needed. Start a meeting and share your screen, video and audio with just a click. Show your screen, share your webcam and speak your mind. GoToMeeting integrates everything – VoIP, telephone, HD video – for a clear and professional web conference. It’s the next best thing to sitting at the same table. Your online meetings are always a tap away with GoToMeeting for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone. Join or start sessions easily on the go and see the presenter’s desktop right on your mobile device."

Clearly it is a viable, perhaps underused alternative, when podcasting. Are you using GoToMeeting to record your podcasts? Have you used it before and then decided not to? I would love to hear your thoughts. Please e-mail me at podcastingguru@gmail.com.

This past weekend I watched David Lynch's movie "Dune" on the big screen. One part that particularly stands out is the "thumper", a device that repetitively beats the ground in a rhythmic pattern. The protagonists of the movie use it to call these huge sandworms that they ride. In podcasting, especially here on the Podcasting Gear Show, my repetitive thumper is time efficiency in podcasting.  How can a podcaster put out the best product in the least amount of time?  This show is a continuation of that beating drum. Christopher Jones from the Ready Room Podcast joins me again to talk about an app that he uses to streamline and more efficiently edit his podcasts in Adobe Audition. The Actions App, which is available on the iPad, allows you to control your most used functions in your editing software at the click of a button on your iPad. You no longer have to drop a menu to carry out normalization of some other function you are trying to carry out. Instead, you simply click a button on your iPad and it is done. And the Actions App is not just for adito editing.  You can use it with e-mail, photo editing, and many more applications. Want to try it out for yourself? Listen to the show and find out how you can win one of three codes to download the Actions App for free.

A 2012 Parsec Finalist

Recording has certain adages that have become well known over the past decade of podcasting.  One of these rules is that for every minute of recording, you can expect to spend 3 to 4 minutes editing, creating show notes, and promoting your show.  While for newer podcasters this might take more time and more seasoned podcasters it might take less, anything we can do to make out editing more enjoyable is bonus.

My editing software journey started with four track cassette recorder in the early 1990s.  I eventually moved onto to Logic Pro.  Because I had a Mac, when I started podcasting I began using Garageband.  It was simple, intuitive, and did most of the things I wanted to do.  But in the fall of 2013, Apple decided it would no longer support the exporting of files from Garageband as an mp3s (They recently reversed this decision.)  I made the jump to Adobe Audition and have never looked back.

Christopher Jones from Trek FM and the Ready Room, like many other podcasters, swear by Adobe Audition.  What sells him on it is that Adobe allows an editor to see the wave form, to voice matching (voice leveling), and much more. What many podcasters accomplish with multiple programs, Adobe Audition does all in one program.

Adobe Audition is not perfect.  You'll hear us discuss some of those in the show.  If you use Adobe Audition, let me know why you use it.  If you have considered using it and decided not to,  let me know that as well.

I started out podcasting with the USB Blue Snowball microphone, something I would never recommend knowing what I know now.  I can still remember sitting in my classroom and podcasting behind the big white orb in front of me.  Some of you know what I am talking about.  I made the decision through a series of events to start podcasting without recording directly into my computer.  When I did this, my Snowball became obsolete.  In most cases you can't plug a USB microphone into a regular mixing board. If the Audio-Technica ATR2100 would have been around when I started podcasting, I could've saved myself a little bit of expense, plus I would have sounded a little bit better. I would not have had to buy a completely new microphone when switching from a USB recording setup to an XLR recording setup.  The Audio-Technica ATR2100 hooks up to both a USB port and an XLR port making it the ultimate versatile microphone. And perfect for the portable studio. John Wilkerson from The Wired Homeschool Podcast is back with me this week to talk about how he uses the Audio-Technica ATR2100 Microphone for his portable studio.  He uses it as an XLR microphone in my studio and you can clearly hear how awesome it sounds. And the price is right. If you want to find out more about the Audio-Technica ATR2100 and perhaps pick one up for your self, you can do so here.

Bitrate, as the name implies, describes the rate at which bits are transferred from one location to another. In other words, it measures how much data is transmitted in a given amount of time. Bitrate is commonly measured in bits per second (bps), kilobits per second (Kbps), or megabits per second (Mbps). For example, a DSL connection may be able to download data at 768 kbps, while a Firewire 800 connection can transfer data up to 800 Mbps.

My daughter, a 12 year old fifth grader, just got into vinyl.  Its my fault.  The English department I work for was tossing a perfectly good record player, so I brought it home, and she, upon hearing and seeing it, commandeered it.  I grabbed my dad’s country western, gospel, and sixties LPs I had stashed in the attic and picked up a copy of the Go Gos at a local flea market; she’s had the beat ever since.

I have a radio DJ friend who only buys vinyl with the sheer belief that the sound heard from vinyl is more pure and more pristine.   And compared to current digital counterparts, he’s right.  And most of us don’t care.

Typical Bit Rates

So how does this translate for podcasting?  And what does this mean for podcasters? Podcasters are really concerned about two things when it comes to bit rate: the sound quality and the file size. These are the things that matter at least to me.

The higher the bit rate, the better quality the sound.  This might make a podcaster be tempted to go for the highest quality mp3 possible.  Who doesn’t want to sound good? But there is  a catch.  High quality come with a price; in this case the price is in file size.  And file size matters for two reasons.

First, larger file sizes take longer for a listener to download.  That means it is using more of their bandwidth and taking them longer to get to your content. Not a good thing.  That means it is also taking longer for you to upload the file to your file hosting service. For those of us with time poverty in our lives, this is time we do not have.

Second, most of us pay a podcast hosting service like Libsyn or Podbean to host our media files.  We pay for a certain amount of virtual storage space for our mp3 files. The larger our files, the quicker our hosting space will be used up and the more we will pay to host our files.  Not good for the economically minded podcasters.

The thing you must ask yourself is what listeners really care about and what they are willing to tolerate when it comes to bit rate. This really depends on what type of podcast you are running.

If you are releasing a music podcast, most listeners will be ok with a 128 kbps. It is a tolerable quality for music that most listeners have gotten used to from burning their own Cds. If you create an hour long podcast of music, that will take up about 56 MBs of space.  If you truly want to release near CD quality music in your podcast, you’ll be exporting your files at around 320 kbps, using 141 mBs of space for an hour long podcast.  That's a heck of big podcast and a heck of a big download. That seems a bit overkill.

A majority of podcasts, however, are spoken word podcasts and need only 64 kbps to produce a good sounding podcast.  That only use 28 MBs for an hour long podcast. Most listeners as they are traveling on their commute, running along the road, or mowing their lawn will not know a difference.

So when thinking of bit rate, consider file size, the quality of file you're ok with, and your audience expectations. For more information of bit rate, please visit here.

Welcome to the Diner.

George Lucas In Love

George Lucas in Love is an independentlive actionparodical short film that started attracting notice in June 1999 when it was passed around Hollywood offices as a filmmaker's "calling card". The film was directed by Joe Nussbaum, a University of Southern California graduate

In the film, George Lucas is a USC college student in 1967, and he's suffering from writer's block as he tries to write a movie about a young space farmer with a bad crop of "space wheat". Everywhere he goes, viewers see classmates and teachers that either resemble, or will influence the creation of, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt, R2-D2, and C-3PO. Lucas is surrounded by inspiration, but he sees nothing. Not even his advisor, who looks and speaks suspiciously like Yoda, is able to help him.

Eventually, young Lucas meets his muse, a young woman (with a very unusual hairdo) named Marion who is "kind of leading a student rebellion". After they meet, everything falls into place for Lucas, as she urges him to "write what you know." His writer's block dissipates and he quickly finishes his masterpiece. However, his shot at romance with the girl is blown when he discovers she's his sister.

In a post-credits scene, a depressed Lucas gets a new idea when his neighbor introduces Lucas to his new pet... a duck named Howard.

Joe Nussbaum is an American film director. A graduate of the University of Southern California, he got his break into the movie industry by passing around Hollywood offices his short film George Lucas in Love. The success of the film eventually got him a deal with Dreamworks, and he has since directed films such as the 2004 production Sleepover, the 2006 film American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile and the 2007 film Sydney White starring Amanda Bynes. His latest project was the Walt Disney Pictures film Prom, starring Aimee Teegarden and Nicholas Braun. He currently is working at MTV writing for and occasionally directing "Awkward."

Joe grew up in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota—a suburb of Minneapolis—through junior high school. At the age of twelve he received a camcorder and proceeded to write and make films without an editing machine. When he started high school the family moved to Brighton, New York—a suburb of Rochester. While in high school, he turned the morning announcements into a closed circuit television program. He also acted in high school plays and one at Nazareth College. His parents are Daniel II a retired developmental pediatrician and Alice née Rosenthal, a Jewish educator and internationally known Judaic needlework designer. His paternal grandfather was born in Germany. His maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were born in Ukraine. His maternal grandmother's family probably came from northeastern Europe, but they have lost all their immigration data. As a youth, Joe was active in haBonim, the labor Zionist youth movement. He spent many summers at their Camp Tavor in Three Rivers, Michigan, and a year on Kibbutz Urim in Israel.

There are three things that every podcaster is looking for when it comes to equipment in their studio.  For one, they want quality. Nothing screams amateur like poorly recorded audio, especially when it is the fault of the equipment. The second thing they are looking for is affordability without sacrificing that quality. So if we can use the tools we already have, then dollars remain in our bank accounts and podcasters, and their wives, remain happy. And lastly, many podcasters are looking for some portability.  Yes, we like our studios, but we also like the ability to take our studios out and about for a bit. Bossjock Studio answers this need.  John Wilkerson from the Wired Homeschool Podcast literally dropped by my studio the other week to chat about how this app has transformed his podcasting. He already owned an iPad and an Audio-Technica ATR2100. He purchased a Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit and walah he had his studio.  Now granted if you don't have an iPhone or iPad, this studio setup will get pricey.  And you do need a USB microphone.  But barring those hurdles, it is possible, as John demonstrated in the Wired Homeschool Podcast to put out quality content with simplicity. Podcast ready with no need for post production, Bossjock allows a podcaster to record a podcast while triggering intros/outros, bumpers and background music all on-the-fly. It allows you to encodes to all your favorite formats – mp3, m4a, wav, aiff and then export the files to FTP, Dropbox, Soundcloud, iTunes, Wifi, iTunes Share, AudioCopy and Email.  It even works with the  iRig PRE that Troy Heinritz talked about the other week.  It is seriously worth the $9.99 price tag. If you already using Bossjock Studio, I would love to know how you are using it.  Drop me a voicemail using the Speakpipe widget to the right.
